{"id":1193,"date":"2013-01-01T15:30:23","date_gmt":"2013-01-01T15:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/?p=1193"},"modified":"2013-01-01T15:30:23","modified_gmt":"2013-01-01T15:30:23","slug":"alternates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/index.php\/2013\/01\/01\/alternates\/","title":{"rendered":"alternates?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Graphic Novels and Audiobooks of 2012<\/h2>\n<p>This is an addendum to the books read in 2012 list as I don&#8217;t feel that books in these formats strictly belong on that list.<\/p>\n<h3>Graphic Novels<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Phonogram 1 &#038; 2<\/strong> by Kieron Gillen and and Jamie McKelvie \u2013 Gillen &#038; McKelvie play with the ghosts of Britpop and the magic of pop music to marvellous effect<br \/>\n<strong>Scott Pilgrim 1 &#038; 2<\/strong> by Bryan Lee O&#8217;Malley \u2013 The first book is OK, the second is good with promise to get even better<br \/>\n<strong>Hellblazer vol 1<\/strong> by Jamie Delano, Rick Veitch, John Ridgway and Alfredo Alcala &#8211;  Apart from the weird Swamp Thing section this whole collection is really good.<br \/>\n<strong>Gotham Central vol 1<\/strong> by Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark \u2013 Batman from the perspective of the ordinary cop. Highly praised for a reason<br \/>\n<strong>Transmetropolitan vol 1<\/strong> by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson &#8211; The insane, profane and wonderful introduction to Spider Jerusalem.<br \/>\n<strong>Thor: Siege<\/strong> by Jeff Parker, Kieron Gillen, Christos Gage and Miguel Sepulvida &#8211; Blah collection of Thor as Asgard comes under attack due to the machinations of Loki. Again.<br \/>\n<strong>Gotham Central vol 3<\/strong> by Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker, Stefano Gaudiano, Michael Lark, Jason Alexander, Kano<\/p>\n<h3>Audiobooks<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Agent to the Stars<\/strong> by John Scalzi and read by Wil Wheaton \u2013 Wheaton does a great job with Scalzi&#8217;s &#8216;practice&#8217; novel. It&#8217;s a lot of fun to listen to. Reviews of this book from <a href=\"http:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/index.php\/2011\/12\/02\/ralph\/\" title=\"ralph?\">2011<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/index.php\/2010\/10\/20\/jelly\/\" title=\"jelly?\">2010<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>The Android&#8217;s Dream<\/strong> by John Scalzi and read by Wil Wheaton \u2013 This is a funny book and the audiobook is it&#8217;s equal in every respect. Reviews of this one from <a href=\"http:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/index.php\/2009\/04\/28\/blue\/\" title=\"blue?\">2009<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/treefell.com\/transmission\/index.php\/2008\/04\/18\/surrender\/\" title=\"surrender?\">2008<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>Redshirts<\/strong> by John Scalzi and read by Wil Wheaton \u2013 The first time I\u2019ve listened to book before reading it (It was <em>substantially<\/em> cheaper to buy the audiobook than import the hardback). This affectionate parody of Star Trek is also a deeply meta piece about being a writer. Very funny with unexpectedly moving &#8216;codas&#8217;.<br \/>\n<strong>Consider Phlebas<\/strong> by Iain M Banks and read by Peter Kenny \u2013 Wow this is a mental book. There is so much happening that you could fill a trilogy of space adventure movies from the content. Superbly read by Kenny.<br \/>\n<strong>The Graveyard Book<\/strong> by Neil Gaiman and read by Neil Gaiman \u2013 An exceptional book. The author reads it himself and does a fine job.<br \/>\n<strong>Jingo<\/strong> by Terry Pratchett and read by Nigel Planer \u2013 The weakest of the Guards books is done no favours by Nigel Planer (Glad this is the one I borrowed from the library rather than buying).
