Blood Bound

Blood Bound

Moon Called

The Winter Long
The latest Toby Daye book’s blurb promises to change her world forever. We do get some meaty revelations but nothing as shocking as the first reveal about Toby’s mother earlier in the series (at least for my money).
I love this series and this is another fine installment. I recommend reading the entire series from Rosemary and Rue onwards.
I’m just waiting for the installment in the series that takes the leap from very good to great. I believe that’s going to happen at some point.
Angelfall
Angels have come to Earth with death and destruction in their wake. No one knows why they’re here but the survivors group into gangs/militia or try to scrape by under the radar.
Penryn has survived despite having to protect a wheelchair bound sister and an insane mother.
After an attack that sees her sister carried off she interferes to save an angel who has his wings cut off in order to secure his help in rescuing her sister.
This messy novel mashes up Biblical stories and dystopian fiction. It has quite a few horrific moments and some creepy sexual undertones which I found rather unpleasant.
One thing I can say for certain is that I never knew where the plot was going which is a relief after so many predictable reads recently but I’m not sure that the author knew where it was going either.
Clean Sweep
This is an insubstantial and cheesy bit of urban fantasy. Innkeepers run neutral waystations for travellers of a more unusual type. Dina Demille is from a line of innkeepers and is bringing a previously dormant inn gradually back to strength when a series of dog killings get her involved with the local werewolf and eventually a vampire warrior.
Yes this book has a vampire/werewolf/human female love triangle.
To be honest the only interesting thing about this was the magic as scifi tech motif, otherwise a bit crap.
The Shambling Guide To New York
This enjoyable slice of urban fantasy was a Christmas gift from my parents this year. I’m not usually so good at reading gifts promptly but this seemed like a quick, fun read and I was not wrong.
An ordinary human finds herself working for a supernatural publishing company editing a travel guide and subsequently smack in the middle of events as chaos hits New York.
As I said it’s a fun a read and an intriguing start to a series. Recommended if you like a bit of urban fantasy.
Chimes at Midnight
The latest Toby Daye book is as enjoyable as ever.
Tremendous upheaval comes to the Kingdom of the Mists in this book but it feels more like the theme of this one is about Toby accepting that she belongs in Faerie with the family she’s made up along the way.
It’s simultaneously very exciting and very annoying that hints about what appears to be the series endgame crop up in the last couple of chapters and the bonus short story.
I think, though, that some really awful things are going to start happening soon to our favourite changeling knight.
A total must read for Toby fans and the series as a whole is more than recommended for those who don’t actively hate urban fantasy.
Rosemary & Rue
I don’t normally re-read books so quickly but I was looking for something to divert me at lunchtimes now that I no longer eat at my desk. This, the first Toby Daye book, just happened to be on my phone.
It’s a very enjoyable urban fantasy novel that sets up the series with a deft hand. There’s a lot of seeds planted in this first book that go on to pay off with interest in later volumes and it was fun to catch that this time around.
If you have any tolerance for urban fantasy please check out this series – it starts well and gets better.
Sandman Slim
Stark escapes from Hell intent on the murder of the circle of magicians responsible for the death of his girlfriend and his exile to the demon’s arenas.
This is an enormously entertaining mix of urban fantasy and noir thriller. The protagonist is a likeable asshole that the author manages to avoid turning into a walking set of cliches.
There’s nothing truly original about this novel but it’s a lot of fun and lays enough groundwork for future sequels for you to care about the world he’s built.
If you want a well constructed piece of urban fantasy with an ass-kicking lead character then this is definitely a book for you.
Midnight Blue-Light Special
The second InCryptid book returns to follow Verity Price as she looks to defend New York’s Cryptid population from a Covenant purge.
Like the first book in this series (Discount Armageddon) this is a fun, action filled piece of urban fantasy.
It’s all wee bit generic but way too entertaining to quibble about it.
Recommended for urban fantasy fans.
